Kindness Matters

I believe that kindness matters. Does one have to set out each and every day to save the world? Where these dramatic means are not necessary in being kind, I do feel each and every one of us should perform small, random acts of kindness on a daily basis. One never knows when this "kindness" will work to your advantage. I can remember many acts of kindness I have shown which have turned possible "bad" situations around, where we can not be kind to everyone, there are many instances where we can, if we only try.

I view on a daily basis as I walk through the hospital in which I work how a smile can aid patients. I rarely smile at anyone who does not smile back. I've viewed patients with the most "sourpuss" expressions on their face, but after I give them a smile while looking right at them, that "sourpuss" expression goes away more times to none. Kindness goes a long way and takes minimal time to achieve.

I always make it a point to look directly at homeless people and greet them. People tend to ignore homeless people. I know there are "panhandler's" and most want to ignore these types due to the fact of constant begging for money, I look directly at them, even if I do not give them money, I give them a smile. The reason I make this a point to perform is that where homeless people are "down and out" they are human beings the same as the rest of us. They are instantly treated less than human beings upon gaining the status of "homeless". A smile could remind these lost souls that they are still worth greeting, this could truly be the difference for someone.

Our children need to view us performing random acts of kindness. We are our children's life mirrors. They view the world as well as life through the actions of their parents. If daughters/sons view Mommy/Daddy going out of their way to help people or perform kind acts, this will more times to none filter down to our children and we will be viewing our children performing these acts in the future. Allowing your children to view these things enables children to learn kindness, compassion as well as love for people. Where I'm not stating that we should not teach our children "Stranger Danger", we should enable them to view their parents being what I would classify as good human beings. It takes far less time to smile as compared to a frown, medically speaking, it takes far less muscles in our face to smile than frown, therefore, save yourself some early wrinkles and just smile.
