Protecting Your Computer

I have been around computers for years. I even teach on Introduction to Computers class at a four-year university. Despite my knowledge of computers, I was not immune to the problems that viruses and spyware can do to a computer. My computer was attacked and it was so bad I ended up replacing my hard drive. Does that sound scary to you? If so, I apologize. At the same time, I hope that my experience can benefit you.

While many computer users are familiar with the term virus, not as many understand the term spyware. Simply put, spyware is software that performs certain behaviors such as advertising, collecting personal information, or changing the configuration of your computer, generally without your premission. Here are a few things that can happen if you get spyware on your computer.

* Pop-up advertisements will appear even when you are not on the internet.

* Your home page (the page that comes up when you first open your internet browser) changes all of sudden and you don’t know why.

* A new toolbar appears and you can’t seem to get rid of it.

* Your computer takes longer than usual to complete certain tasks.

* Your computer crashes a lot when it never used to.

Just reading the above list should be enough to encourage you to read on and do what you can to prevent viruses and spyware from attacking your computer. Below is a list I compiled of things you can do to protect yourself from viruses and/or spyware. Following these suggestions doesn’t mean you will never have a problem. However, it should lessen the chance of it happening.

1. Everyone should have good anti-virus software on their computer. This is especially true it you use the internet. I use PC-cillin Internet Security 2006 on my computer. Before that I used Norton’s Internet Security. Both are good but only work well if used properly. If you are a beginner computer user, I would recommend Norton over PC-cillin. However, PC-cillin is a good program for those who are more advanced computer users. It requires a little more patience to set up and a better understanding of computers than Norton’s does.

2. While it is nice to have Internet Security software, one must make sure it is turned on and that it is updated weekly. New viruses are being created daily and if you don’t update your anti-virus software weekly your computer is open to attack by new viruses.

3. Make sure you have a good firewall and that it is turned on. A firewall helps protect your computer from outside attacks. Again, a good Internet Security program such as Norton’s and PC-cillin come with a firewall. However, remember they only work if they are turned on.

4. I use two free programs in addition to PC-cillin to give me a little extra protection from spyware. I run these programs once a week to ensure that my computer is free from spyware. The two programs I use are:

SpyBot - Search and Destroy
Spyware Blaster

Both these programs can be downloaded for free at www.downloads.com

5. I use a free program that checks for advertising trackers and lets me get rid of them. You can download a copy of this program at www.downloads.com. The name of this program is: Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal

There are a few other things I would like to mention concerning viruses and protecting yourself from them.

a. When you receive an email from someone you don’t know and it has an attachment. Never open the attachment. Often times these attachments can have viruses in them.

b. If you receive an email from someone you know with an attachment and you weren’t expecting it, don’t open the attachment. Contact them first to make sure they sent it. Sometimes a virus can send out emails without the person even knowing.

c. Be careful when you are downloading software or programs off the internet. Often spyware software will install during the installation of other software you want such as a music or video files. Whenever you are installing something on your computer, make sure you carefully read all disclosures, including the license agreement and privacy statement. Sometimes the inclusion of unwanted software in a given software installation is documented, but it may appear at the end of a license agreement or privacy statement.

d. Be careful when you use a file from someone else’s computer. If someone gives you a disk, even if it is your best friend, run a virus scan on the disk before opening any files. It is possible for the file to have a virus without the person knowing about it.

I hope these tips will prove helpful to you. If you have good protection and exercise caution you have a much better chance of getting through your computer life without the headaches of viruses and spyware. However, remember there is no guarantee that it will never happen to you.

A computer virus is a program that invades your computer system, hides there, and replicates itself. Viruses spread when you launch an infected application or start up your computer from a disk that has infected system files.

RV Readiness Are You and Your RV Ready for The Road?

Do you think you have RV readiness? If you are not sure what it means then you probably dont have it. It does not mean that you are ready to purchase your first RV. RV readiness also does not mean that you have found and purchased your first RV. In order to be truly ready to head out onto the road, you will need to do quite a bit of preparation to get ready for your new RV and your adventures out on the road. If you are prepared with RV readiness, you will feel confident about your ability to handle your RV and all of the experiences that come with being an RV owner.

In the beginning, you may be a little overwhelmed by all of the systems and components of your new RV. A good sales representative or dealer will help you in this area of RV readiness. They should walk you through the RV and give you hands-on instruction on everything from how the microwave works to how to fill and empty your water tanks. As you walk through you can make an RV readiness checklist to go over each time before you head out on the road. If you did not get this kind of instruction before you brought your RV home, see if you can find an experienced RV owner to go over this RV readiness information with you. Use your owners manual as a guide.

Next, you need to make sure that you have good RV driving skills. You should either take a course or practice on the surface streets and freeways (or even in an empty parking lot) to get the feel of driving, turning, and stopping your RV.

A packing list is most essential. As you think of things add them to the list and check them off when they are packed. Some of the commonly forgotten items include medications, a can opener, and toilet paper.

The Winning Distinction

In the entire history of mankind no one has ever been, and will ever be exempted from the challenges of life. There has never been, and probably will never be a hero in the absence of adversity. In fact, it has been argued that the true measure of greatness is not necessarily the size of ones accomplishments, but greatness is to be measured by the size of the obstacles that one surmounts on the way to achievement. It is also equally important to point out early that no one has ever been and will ever be disqualified from the success race. The race will always be open to all and the rewards will always be within the grasp of all. Adversity is what sifts and separates the chaff from the true seed, and the winners from the losers. The winners, the losers and the pretenders and impostors are all revealed on the day of adversity.

What makes the distinction between people and especially between the winners and the losers is how they fare in the face of adversity. The distinction in the day of adversity comes not from the strength of ones muscle or physical prowess. The winning distinction is found in the mindset with which one faces the challenges of life. The winners have a big game mentality. They thrive and flourish when the odds are greatest, and when the tide is against them. The losers on the other hand shrink in the day of adversity.

The winners is identified because of certain empowering attitudes that he has towards adversity and set backs. It is not feasible to discuss all of them exhaustively in a space small as this, hence only a few are explored below.

Winners view adversity and failure is an opportunity. They deliberately seek out the opportunity that is contained in adversity. In many cases, it is an opportunity to learn and to grow.Yes, set backs sometimes does slow people down and disappoint. However, with every disappointment there is an appointment. With every failure there is a unique opportunity to solve a problem. The winners have an attitude that says, It is never over until it is over. Losers on the hand die before they take their last breath. They give up too quickly and too easily. When all the money, the friends, and the support system are gone, winners are cognizant of the fact that they still have the next minute. This is very important because as long as you still have the next minute available to you then all is not lost. The next available minute is important to each one of us because if we choose to, we can permanently alter the circumstances of our lives in the next minute. We can begin in the next minute to right what is wrong in our lives, and to sow the seeds of a glorious future.

The winners are not overly discouraged by todays harvest because they understand that todays harvest is determined by the seeds of actions sown in the past. Winners therefore define a good day not by how much they have earned on that day, but by how much good seed they have planted towards a future harvest. Even in difficult times they have a vision for the future and keep pressing towards it. This is an investor mindset. The losers have their eyes strained on what can be consumed now. They define a good day by how much they have enjoyed themselves without paying due regard to the possible future repercussions of their actions. They are ignorant of the great law of the universe to which we all bow, which says, Play now and pay later or Pay now and play later. In their youth the losers over play, but they pay for this in their retirement when they realize that their retirement is a ticket to poverty and indigence. The winners from time to time choose to forgo certain luxuries while they build the foundations for a more solid future. The winners are visionary but the losers are myopic. The losers are like the proverbial foolish farmer who roasts all his corn seed forgetting that the time to plant shall come. While this may be laughable many people are in exactly the same trap. They are busy consuming what should be investment for the future, busy sitting on their laurels when they could be using the time to groom themselves for future opportunities.

Winners recognize that the endings of today are the beginnings of tomorrow. With this in mind daily they strive to end on a great note. When adversity strikes they do not run away from it, but they engage it knowing that tomorrow will start where they left off yesterday. If they run away from adversity then when the sun rises on the following day, they will still be on the run and no closer to solution and respite.

Love Yourself First
As we approach Valentines Day, the traditional day of love, I cannot stop thinking of the importance of self-love. One of my favorite philosophers, Joseph Campbell, said as we love ourselves, we move toward our own bliss. My thought is: what would happen if we would broaden the concept of Valentines Day...

Non Reciprocal and Reciprocal Links - Do We Need Them?

Actually, the answer is yes……..and no. What is a reciprocal link? It is a link to a page that is linked back to ours. Of course, a non reciprocal link is a link from a page that we are not directly linked to.

Page rank is associated in some ways to linking. You see, the more links that point to our pages, the more important Google tm or other search engines think our page is. Non reciprocal links to our page (not on our page) add a lot more weight than reciprocal links. Search engines think that if a page is willing to link to ours and not get a link back, then our page must be important. They see it as a recommendation. But thats not always true. The importance of the pages that link to ours is also accounted for. You can get 100 free hosting pages of your own and then link them to your special page with non reciprocal links and you wouldn’t get any change in rank; it is a “Zero * Zero = Zero” equation.

You have to get links from pages that rank well.
Then comes the other side of the question. Can I have any page link mine? And the answer is NO.
Search engines think of the web as a neighborhood. If you are linked to a good neighborhood then you must be good. If you are linked to a bad “hood” then you must be bad and they rank you.

So linking to pages with illegal content such as MP3’s, Warez, Hackers, etc. will soon get you a bad ranking. And probably your submission to the directories will not be accepted.

The other point of linking is ANCHOR TEXT.
Anchor text is the text of the hyperlink. Read this two examples:

Example 1
http://www.elmejorguia.com/Index_english.htm

Example 2
Free tools for webmasters

You inmediately see the difference. Although both links can point to the same page the way they are phrased is different. Not only does this make a difference in the way people read the link or the way the link gets their attention, but also when search engines “see” the link, they associate this words with your site and you climb ranks in those Keywords for any associated searchs.

Now you get the point?

Your links should have good anchor text that is related to the keywords that you want to exploit.

But search engines also see KEYWORD SPAM when they find too many links with the same phrasing beacuse it doesn’t seem natural They think that it is impossible that all webmasters would write the same words when linking your page. That means that you have to use slightly different phrases each time you get links to your page.

Last but not least, search engines do not see words inside pictures so image links and banners do not get you any ranking for any keyword.

Reciprocal Links Vs. Text Link Ads - Which Is Best?
Everyone knows that you have to have inbound links into your site in order for the search engines to value it and rank it highly against your chosen keywords. Finding the Ideal Recreational Vehicle Part

Finding the ideal recreational vehicle part means knowing a little bit about your recreational vehicle and what makes it operate the way it does. This does not require a comprehensive, studied knowledge of the vehicles operation but a little bit of background information on certain aspects of the recreational vehicle can help you find the right recreational vehicle part without much of a hassle. This obviously depends on whether or not the dealer for the part is as knowledgeable as you claim to be or vice versa. Part of finding parts is knowing where to look.

You may find yourself in need of an engine part for your recreational vehicle. This requires you to find out a few details. The first thing you should know is the year of the vehicle and the make and model of your recreational vehicle. This helps find the right company in charge of making the recreational vehicle part. From that point, you need to find out what system the part is under. In other words, is it a cooling system part or a belt or a hose? Discovering this aspect may require the help of a professional at this point, especially if you are not certain. You do not want to end up paying for the wrong part.

    Locating Part Specifics

From this point, you need to locate the actual recreational vehicle part. Finding this might take you to a parts specialty store or an outlet that enables you to pick a part from a selection of parts. Give the best available description to the owner and he or she can help locate the part for you in their store. If they have a parts catalogue and you are familiar with using one, you can locate your part in that fashion. Be aware that there is a special technique to reading and using parts catalogues that may require some assistance. From the catalogue, you can get a part number and then the owner can order the recreational vehicle part.

If your part is not an engine part, the scenario for locating the specific part is a little bit different but covers the same ground. Going to a part specialty store can help locate your part a little bit quicker. Some of these stores are in the Yellow Pages or can be located by heading to the original dealer of the RV. In many instances, in fact, the RV dealer may have the recreational vehicle part you are need.

How Hair Transplant Surgery is Performed

Are you starting to bald? Are you thinking about having a hair transplant performed, but you don’t know enough about it? If you are, you are not alone. More and more people are electing to have this treatment performed every year. For those who are interested, but need more information, the following will provide what you are looking for.

The scalp then gets sutured or stapled together and the donor hairs are given to technicians. The technicians remove each individual hair follicle and place them into a saline solution where they will await transplant. In the mean time, the surgeon is busy cutting small incisions into the front of the head within the hairline that was drawn earlier. There needs to be a separate incision for every follicle that is to be transplanted. This number can be as high as 2,000 per transplant.

In about a week or so, the incisions have started to heal, the scabs have fallen off, however, it will take up to a year for real hair growth to appear. In order to avoid further hair transplant procedures from needing to be performed, it is recommended that the patient use a drug such as Propecia. The continued use of this drug will help to minimize the need for another surgery.

The first step involved in a hair transplant is for the surgeon to draw a replacement hairline for the patient. Then the scalp is numbed and the donor hairs, usually from the back of the head, are shaved. Once this is completed, the skin that the donor hairs are attached to is removed from the head.

As a man ages, he looses hair. There is not much that can be done to stop this from happening. There are topical and oral drugs that can be taken to slow the process, but if they are stopped, the hair loss resumes. A person can use cover ups such as toupees or hair weaves, but they really do not look very natural. Enter the hair transplant surgery. This surgery utilizes hair from the body (normally the back of the head) that is not programmed to fall out to replace the missing follicles. But how do they do it?

John Mancini has been writing about Hair Transplant online and offline for a long time. Visit http://ez-hair-transplant.com or http://best-hair-transplant.com to read more about matters like hair replacement and hair restoration surgery.

    That Fearful Thing Called Divorce

One of the biggest emotions in divorce is fear of the unknown. There is the not knowing what is going to happen with your life. This applies to children and adults alike. The fear of what is going on during and what will happen after the divorce is the most difficult part however with the right support and resources anyone can make it through a divorce.

One of the things that you have to learn to do during a divorce is to confront your fears, this is sometimes easier said then done. One of the biggest things you can do to help with this fear is to arm yourself with the information of what is going to happen and during what approximate time line. Finding out as much information as you can will help you to be in as much control as possible. It is very important to confront and conquer your fears during this time so that you do not risk your mental and physical health.

There is the fear of spending the rest of your life alone. There is the fear of loosing your family and friends during and after the divorce. Here is a little secret for you your true friends that were your friends before the divorce should still be your friends afterwards. After all true friends stand beside you no matter what even if they do not agree with you when the dust settles the ones that are still there are true friends indeed.

At the beginning of the divorce these fears are very strong however as things progress these fears start to ease as you become accustomed to doing more and more on your own. 3 Huge Performance Review Mistakes

I can remember the moment vividly. I was sitting in my manager’s office for my annual review meeting. Stunned. That experienced is etched in my memory and it was the pivotal point at which I wanted to quit that job.

How do your review meetings go with your staff? Is it such an negatively emotional experience for your staff that they may be secretly thinking about quitting? In this issue, I will share 3 huge mistakes managers make with performance reviews and also what you can do to avoid them.

    The Surprise
As you may have guessed, this review mistake is what I fell victim to. There I was sitting in my manager’s office listening to his perspective of me. Hearing about my areas for growth wasn’t the problem. It was that it was the very first time I had heard those sentiments. Had I heard them during my review year, that awareness would have given me the opportunity to address the issues. What goes through an employee’s mind with “surprise reviews” is that more surprises are likely to be ahead, the worst of which could be “you’re fired.” So that review experience has a huge potential for a resignation somewhere down the road.
How to Avoid this: Meet with your staff regularly. Weekly one-on-ones are beneficial or at the very least, once per month. But meeting about projects and tasks alone do not give the person a sense for how they are doing overall. Make an appointment in your calendar for a quarterly review of the person’s performance — a specific time where you can have a higher level conversation about how they are doing overall. Reviews should be just that - a review of what has already happened during the year; not a surprise.

    The Negative Hammer
I’ve also been on the receiving end of the “negative hammer.” That’s when the review delivery focuses too heavily on all the stuff the person did wrong during the review year or what needs to be fixed. The person on the receiving end feels hammered, beaten up and largely unmotivated by the end of the review meeting. They often walk away with the thought of “I can never do anything right so why bother working here.”
How to Avoid this: As managers, we tend to be overly focused on what needs to improve in our organizations. We are trained to spot problems and fix them. We often forget that the people we manage are human beings and that all human beings need encouragement, support, and affirmation. In review meetings (and during the year as well), spend time on what the person did well, what you value in their contribution to the group, what you see standing out as their strengths and why those strengths have a positive impact on the organization.

    The Smoothing Over
This typically happens when a manager has a overly empathetic working style. It is difficult for him or her to deliver bad news so the issues mentioned in the review get significantly smoothed over in the review delivery. When a manager is unable to clearly articulate what changes are needed in a person’s performance, the person either walks away confused about whether the issues were serious or not, or worse, they walk away thinking they have no issues to work on.
How to Avoid this: If this tends to be your style, you would probably need a little more prep time for the review delivery so that your message is clear. But caution–do not use the review meeting as the place to finally hit the nail on the head. That should happen during the review year otherwise we are back to the “surprise review” mentioned above. Some suggestions for communication around concerns in 1-on-1 meetings:
    * You do very well with
and [use AND not BUT] one observation is that you can continue to increase your effectiveness by [specific action(s) for improvement]. What are your thoughts on that?
    * I’ve observed that [Area] appears to have been a bit of a challenge for you over the past few weeks. What has been most challenging about that? What are some of your thoughts on how to address those challenges? How can I help?
    * [Project] seems to be moving a slower pace than we anticipated and I am concerned about missing the deadline. What are some of the roadblocks you are experiencing? What are your suggestions for how to address those?
If you have these type of discussions consistently during the review year, you create more opportunities to address issues head on and get the employee moving toward success. Practicing being consistently clear all during the year ensures that you can be crystal clear in the review meeting as well, without surprises.

Show the World Your Wares Easily and Inexpensively

Youve spent a lot of time preparing your PowerPoint
presentations and now youre ready to show the world all your
company has to offer. You set up some appointments for sales
presentations with a few members of the local Chamber of
Commerce. On the appointed day, you lug your laptop and your
presentation to your prospective clients office and start your
show. Theyre impressed with what they see and you get the job.
And thats the way things are supposed to work.

But what happens when youre ready to start finding clients
outside a 30-mile radius? For one thing, your costs for getting
new work will soar. Not only will your travel expenses increase,
but the time spent traveling will keep you from working on other
tasks that need to get done.

Its hard when youre trying to grow your business solo and
youre the one wearing all the hats. You can multi-task to a
certain extent, but still, when you work alone, theres just so
much you can accomplish in one day. Sure you can hire help, but
that means adding payroll and other employee management tasks to
    your already overburdened schedule.

What if there was a way you could show your PowerPoint
presentations to anyone in the world, at any time of the day,
without going broke? Do you think you could nail new business? Is
this the thing that youve been wishing for night after night,
while you lay there wide awake trying desperately to fall asleep?

Well for one low annual fee, which works out to be about $50 per
month, you can show your PowerPoint presentations as many times
as you want, to anyone, anywhere in the world. No, youre not
dreaming! The technology exists right now.

When you want someone to view your PowerPoint presentation, you
send that person an invitation by email. The invitation provides
a link and an access code. Your guest simply clicks on the link,
enters the code, then sits back and enjoys the show!

Because your guests view the presentation from a standard web
browser, they wont need any special software to see your
presentation. And even though youre not physically present, you
    can still control the show.

There are no limits to the number of presentations that you can
store in your private account. You can jump around from slide to
slide and select the slides you want your audience to see. You
can also switch between different presentations while your
viewers are still logged in. And best of all, you can read right
from your notes without anyone else noticing.

Up to ten viewers can logon and view your presentation
simultaneously. You can show your presentations to an unlimited
number of viewers, but there is an additional cost for this.
Anyone who has a PDA can view your presentation, too, as long as
Flash is built into the PDA.

So if youre ready to show the world your new product
demonstration, or you need to conduct a meeting with different
people who are located in different offices, or you are in the
training business and youre setting up virtual classrooms, or
even if you need to train others on the use of a particular
    product, you need OnlinePRESENTER.

OnlinePRESENTER requires Windows 98, 2000, XP or NT and
    PowerPoint 2000, XP, or 2003.

This cutting-edge way to show off your PowerPoint presentations
is well worth the price of admission. Without leaving the comfort
of your home office, you can be showing your wares to prospects
living in New York or New Delhi! So sit back and let the show
    begin.

How Do I Fix a Virus Attack On The Registry?
"How do I fix a virus attack on the registry?" This is eating me for the last few days. I am confused. I tried available anti viruses but they were no use. Then somebody told me a different thing. He said that registry is a very specialized area and any virus attack in this part should be dealt with very carefully, professionally and with expertise. I did not know what a registry was all about. He told me that it was like the key to a vault. It c...

Great Presentation Skills - The 3 Immutable Pillars of Great PowerPoint Presentations
First a disclaimer. No matter how great your PowerPoint slides are, your presentation will fail if you do not have good preparation. In all my articles, I keep stressing the fact that PREPARATION is the key to all great presentations. RV Waster Water Odors; Gray Water and Sewer Water Solutions

Recreational Vehicles have holding tanks for the water that is used. The water for the showers, sinks, dishwashers and laundry go into the gray water tank and the water for the toilets along with all that waste goes into a sewer tank. Generally, this does not cause any issues, but sometimes it can cause problems and odor and therefore you need to monitor this situation, dump at a specified RV dump as needed and take care of odors as they occur.

The best thing I have found to eliminate odor in the sewer water holding tank is the Thetford Aqua-Kem RV products. They come in granulars, liquids or dissolvable tablets. You can have your choice of also non-formaldehyde odor control in Aqua-Kem Green and both are bio-degradable too. These products in the 64 ounce bottle last a very long time, over a year in fact even if you are dry camping full-time. Another product they make is Aqua Zyme, which actually eats the waste and that is a very nice idea too.

For gray water odor, which can occur if you allow your gray water holding tank to fill up too much or if it gets extremely hot where you are; I use Thetford Gray Water Odor Control in the 20 ounce bottle. I bought some about a year ago and the bottle is just under half full still. For the serious RVer odor elimination is an important consideration and I hope you will consider all this in 2006.

Lockable Water Supply RV Fillers Considered
If you own a Recreational Vehicle or motor home then often when dry camping you use your water tank water for showers, making ice cubes and drinking water. Your water supplies should be protected and therefore it makes sense to invest in a lockable water supply filler adapter. There are several types available and the ones with the little doors are the best. Plus if it is tampered with you will be able to tell that someone has messed with it.Lock...

Replacing RV Water Pumps; Do it Yourself ShurFlo Remove and Installation
Water is one of the most important things for human life and when you are touring the country in a Recreational Vehicle you must consider that you will need water. Generally water is delivered when hooked up in an RV park by a garden hose into your coach. When you are dry camping you have a fresh water storage tank on board and you use that instead.Of course then you must have a water pump usually electric in most all RVs to get the water to your...

RV Winterizing - Getting Ready for the Cold
You need to know how to perform RV winterizing tasks whether you live in your RV year-round or you plan on storing it, if you live in an area that gets below freezing. RV winterizing is somewhat similar to winterizing your cabin or home if you leave it unheated. Is There A Wrong Way To Wash Your Hair?
It's not as simple as it sounds. There is a difference! When washing your hair, it is best if you get in the shower. You may give yourself a back-ache and wont be able to rinse properly if you wash your hair in the sink. Start by rinsing your hair to remove any leave-in conditioner or styling aids. Use a quarter sized dollop of shampoo and rub your hands together to distribute it. Put the shampoo on your scalp, not the ends of your hair. Work up a...
