Teach Your Kids Arithmetic - Subtraction Shortcuts

As students, we become comfortable with what we learn first. Of the four arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, we learn to add first and for this reason are most comfortable with addition. If we apply the principle of thinking in terms of what we are most comfortable with, then subtraction need not be a difficult operation to master. Consequently, by applying addition principles to subtraction, we find our shortcut to mastery of this operation.

Addition is the first pillar of arithmetic magic. Once this operation is mastered, all others can be conquered. The reason for this is inherent in the nature and interrelationship of the four arithmetic operations. You see addition and subtraction are inverse operations of one another. This interrelationship imputes a connection between these two procedures. What this means is that we can master one through the mastery of the other. Moreover, multiplication can be mastered through addition, since multiplication is repeated addition; similarly, division via multiplication or subtraction, since division is repeated subtraction as well as the inverse operation of multiplication. Thus why fret with mastering four distinct arithmetic operations when we can think of mastering one and then using shortcuts and derivative principles to master the others?

Such is the case with subtraction. If you have read my book Arithmetic Magic (Arithmetic Magic ) then you learned how to master subtraction through addition. In this work, I show you how to handle subtraction problems like 106 - 53. Rather than do a subtraction, you can think of adding up from 53 to 106. Another way of thinking about 106 - 53 is what is missing from 53 to make 106? This is the same principle that is taught to cashiers to make change, before, of course, the newer cash registers came out that do this for them. What cashiers would do is count up from the 53 to the 106. Thus we count from 53 to 60 to get 7. Then we count from 60 to 100 to get 40 more. So far we have counted 7 + 40 or 47 total. The final step is to count from 100 to 106 which is 6 more. As a result, we have 47 + 6 or 53 as our total. Thus 106 - 53 is 53. Let us take one more example to show how nicely this shortcut works. Take 96 - 49. Rather than fumble with this, its simple if we add up from 49 to 96 as thus: 49 to 50 makes 1; 50 to 96 makes 46; and 1 + 46 is equal to 47. So 96 - 49 is 47.

If you apply this subtraction shortcut regularly, you will never have a problem with this operation again. This method works with more complicated examples as well as you can easily verify. Try to teach this method to your kids and have them practice with a few examples. In addition to the good mental workout they will get, their arithmetic skills will soar to new heights. And theres nothing better than seeing those As on their report cards.

Unschool Your Kid for Better Learning Options - 12 Year Old Genius

Are you one of those people who believes that you have to tell kids what to learn to make them get a good education? When I was little I used to meet people all the time who said I should be in school. Id tell them, I am in school.

Those folks would argue that I wasnt learning traditional school stuff and Id argue that traditional school stuff didnt apply to my life. They didnt understand that, but I did.

While my friends were adding up lines and columns of numbers, I was applying those numbers to my life. I was using measuring tapes and rulers to build a shed. I gave change to folks who purchased my books at book signings, and I was ordering books and figuring the best cost per shipping on ordering packets. If I ordered 11 books, the shipping was only $1.12 per book. So that was my break point. I always ordered 11 books.

When my friends complained that they were bored with school, I smiled and pressed forward with yet another project that taught me something more. I learned about komodo dragons and created a website. I learned about how to make money online, from a class mom was teaching (I signed up for her video class) and started my own blog. I learned that I could do whatever I wanted with my life if I wrote down my goals and kept working toward my goals. I wrote books, blogs, and websites.

While my friends got grades for their efforts of writing, I was earning money for college, clothes and trips my family wanted to take. I could earn and learn with unschooling, and I did. But, I dont think my friends understand

Spyware - Get Protected

Spyware is the name that was given to wicked programs that install themselves without your permission. If that doesn’t sound bad. what is worse is that they will bug you more than most viruses can. How you ask? Spyware can produce hundreds of pop-ups, it can monitor your internet browsing and/or spam your email with junk. It can even be used to commit identity fraud by gathering your information. If you say that you don’t have Spyware and that you won’t get it, you are kidding yourself.

How does an average user go about preventing Spyware from taking control of their personal computer (and life)? There are a variety of methods that you can use. For instance you can manually remove it yourself once you are invaded. But that’s not recommended unless you are an expert at computers and by expert, I mean you have received your certifications. With that being said, we common folk will be using spyware removal software since its less time consuming to use. The software will identify the threat and eliminate the Spyware.

What software should I use to remove the spyware? There is a variety of programs to choose from. But the most used programs are Spybot’s “Search and Destroy” and Lavasoft’s “Ad-Aware”. These two programs are free for personal use and Lavasoft provides other professional solutions. There are also quite a few other programs that you can purchase that will have some of the same features.

Spybot’s “Search and Destroy” will block bad programs from being installed with its immunity feature and even block programs from being installed that are harmful to your computer (if you are using Internet Explorer or Opera). It will also identify the programs that are collecting your information or displaying adds and removes them!

Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware does a variety of services for you. Here is a list of what this program will do for you. It scans your memory, registry, hard drives for known Data-mining (logs what sites you have visited). It looks for aggressive advertising (evil never ending pop-ups), Parasites, Keyloggers (logs your passwords), Trojans, Dialers and Malware (Spyware). The program even identifies Browser hijackers (programs that change your homepage) and other tracking components that might be missed by anti-virus software. The program will prompt you to remove all that is listed. Ad-Aware even provides a threat assessment of each nasty program that it has located.

If you don’t decide to download any spyware protection software or purchase some, at least consider these few ways to avoid Spyware. Avoid downloading from websites that you don’t trust (that means websites you have never visited before). You should also read all the license agreements when you install software and other statements associated with that software. Don’t bother with ads that say “free” music or movies “all you have to do is download this program here”, since this should be a give away that it may contain some if not a lot of spyware. Disabling cookies can sometimes help as well. Also checking for updates for your internet browser periodically will help since the makers will periodically fix any bugs that are found.

Tips and Tools for Improving Proposal Readability

Graphics, focus boxes, paragraph order, structure, text layout, and flawless spelling and grammar are all necessary attributes of a great proposal. After spending years in proposal management, however, I have noticed that one important attribute, readability, often is overlooked. Since editors frequently refrain from making in-depth content edits, it is the technical writers task to make their sections more readable before their sections go to editors. The problem is that many people tasked with technical writing do not know what readability means, and how to make tangible changes to make their sections more readable. This article offers a tutorial on improving readability that proposal writers could start using immediately.

Before a proposal section ever makes it to an editors desk, it should be understandable at a 9th10th grade level if it is non-technical, and at an 11th 12th grade level if it is highly technical. Why readability? Try to think like your audience, the government evaluators. Each evaluator is responsible for reading and scoring multiple sections of proposals submitted by you and your competitors. Each set of proposal sections consists of dozens or hundreds of pages of boring technical content. Usually, on the Source Selection Evaluation Board (SSEB), only a few people are truly interested in the proposed solutions. These are the people who made this program a reality and who are responsible for its execution. The rest are often the stuckees who are doing their jury duty when it is their turn to serve on the SSEB. It is possible that as many as 80% of SSEB members may be neither technically proficient in the topic nor enthusiastic about the technical gobbledegook through which they have to navigate.

Not only are many evaluators apprehensive about serving on SSEB, but they also may not have the PhDs or technical degrees necessary to fully understand the topic of your proposal. Unlike those who have spent a lot of time in academia, they may not be in the habit of reading and understanding long research papers written by experts for other experts. As a result, their eyes glaze over the long, dense, and jargon-heavy technical sentences. They skip past the paragraphs that do not make immediate sense. Your score suffers and, in a close competition, you may lose.

To avoid this kind of scenario, you need to teach your technical writers and subject matter experts to get in the habit of improving readability before the final submission of their sections to editors. It is difficult, however, for authors to simplify and substantively edit their own work. It is a good thing, then, that this is the 21st century, and that there are easy-to-use tools right at your and your technical writers fingertips.

The first tool requires just a few settings changes in MS Word. When finished with a draft of a proposal section, you need to follow these seven simple steps:

1. Select Tools at the top of the screen
2. Select Options (inside Tools menu)
3. Click on the Spelling & Grammar tab
4. Check the two bottom boxes under the Grammar heading (Check grammar with spelling and Show readability statistics)
5. Select Grammar & Style under Writing style
6. Click the Settings button
7. Set the Require options (I select always, inside, and 1); check all Grammar rules; scroll down and check all Style rules except for the use of first person; and select Ok.

After making these settings changes, you can select Tools and then Spelling and Grammar. Perform a scan of your finished draft and make the recommended changes as you see fit. Rerun the scan again to include the changes you made, and take a close look at the Readability Statistics box that appears after the Spelling and Grammar check has finished.

First, look at the Averages section of this box. If you are averaging more than 4 or 5 sentences per paragraph, you have a higher chance of an evaluator getting lost or stuck. You will want to cut down or break up your paragraphs. If you are averaging more than 20 words per sentence, it is likely that you are attempting to address too many ideas at one time. A scorer is apt to miss important information when it is clumped together like this, so keep your sentences short.

Next, look at the Readability section of the Readability Statistics box. Passive sentences are those in which the sentences verb is acting on its subject, rather than the subject acting on the verb. It is best to avoid passive sentences wherever possible. For example, Section 1.3 outlines our management approach is a much stronger sentence than our management approach is outlined in Section 1.3. Passive sentences are sometimes unavoidable, but your writing is much more vivid and concise when you limit passive voice to well below 20%.

When it comes to the Flesch Reading Ease statistic, you want to stay in the 40-50 range or higher. This statistic rates your document on a 121-point scale depending on the average syllable count of your words and the average number of words per sentence. If your score is under 20, make a real effort to eliminate four- and five-syllable words. Very few such words are essential.

The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level statistic is the aggregate measurement of your documents readability. It translates the Flesch measurement into a U.S. grade level between 1 and 12 to give you a sense of the number of years of school experience that an average person would need to understand your writing. For instance, if your draft gets an 11.2, you can assume that an average 11th grade student could follow it, which also means that it will not put your evaluators to sleep. Remember, your goal should be for your section to measure somewhere between the 9th and the 12th grade levels. This ensures that you handle complex subject matter in a direct and evaluator-friendly way.

The MS Word Flesch-Kincaid scale has a glitch, however - it does not go higher than 12th grade. It is important to know that if your document scores a 12.0, this does not mean that it reads at a 12th grade level. Your actual score could be much higher than 12.0, so if you do get this score, there is a second tool that you should use to check your documents readability.

The second tool is a free online utility that provides a more accurate and comprehensive reading. You can find it at http://www.online-utility.org/english/readability_test_and_improve.jsp. After you copy and paste the text that you want the tool to scan, it will give you an accurate Flesch-Kincaid score even if it is above 12.0, along with four other readability indexes. For example, one index, called the Gunning Fog, uses a method similar to the Flesch scale to calculate readability, but omits proper names and suffixes like ed and -ing that could make words count as more complex than they really are. The tool also shows you problem sentences that you may need to rewrite in order to improve overall readability.

Using these tools on a regular basis will help you and your technical writers to develop good writing habits that result in greater proposal readability. Caring about readability translates into caring about your evaluators. Caring about your evaluators leads to winning. Incidentally, in case youre curious, this article is at an 11th grade reading level, right where I wanted it.

What Type Of A Hair Loss Natural Solution Benefits You?

There are many types of conventional hair loss treatment plans that you can get on and use. However if you’re looking for a non abrasive less side effect type of treatment plan then you may want to look in the arena of natural solutions for hair growth.

You will get information that will lead you in a couple of different directions for you to try and see if it fits you and if you can meet success with the treatment plan.

One of the big reasons that a great many people look towards natural remedies for hair loss is because of the side effects that I’ve already mentioned. Sometimes these side effects can be quite devastating and affect your overall general health.

So getting into a natural hair loss solution is the use of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is becoming popular with people but not enough research has been completed in this aspect as of yet to get concrete results. But it does receive results from some people. The basis of aromatherapy is that it uses oils secreted from various herbs such as cedar wood, grapefruit, jojoba, lavender, lemon rosemary and the like.

The oils from the various herbs are combined in a way for the users to use into some kind of a compound that you can massage into your scalp and using special air dispensers to get the full effect of the aroma of the herbs. Evidently the combined usage of massaging the oils and the dispensation of the herbs into the air at times may arrest hair loss to a certain degree.

This may sound a bit off the road type of treatment plan but for some people it does work and if there are no harsh after effects then it might be worth a look and see if there is any credence to this fact.

Another type of natural hair loss remedy comes from the middle East with the art of Ayureda.

Ayureda is an ancient art of medical discipline that involves massages and sometimes digesting certain types of herbs used to promote and heal hair loss.

Knowing a qualified practitioner and talking with some of the clients is recommended if you want to go this route.

Of course we could also talk about modification of your diet plan. If you are already on a well balanced diet plan then we need not talk about it. But for the majority people diet is a 4 letter word that is hardly said much less followed.

A diet does not have to be a forced meal but instead be part of a nutritional protein plan that will help you gain strength and put the nutrients into your body that it needs and wants to insure proper hair growth.

You can get natural hair loss solution foods at your local grocery store a lot cheaper than going through a traditional medication treatment plan to regrow your hair. It’s your choice but make sure that you confide in a qualified medical physician in either case.

Learn how to cope with hair loss and find out other peoples perspectives on the matter through the use of forums where quality information is openly discussed to educate people. Visit http://www.thehairlossfix.com to get a free ebook that contains information about hair loss that may help you find a cure.

Beware Of Rogue Spyware Disguised As Security Software

Rogue spyware gets into our lives mainly because human nature is such that we easily get attracted to free things, especially when they appear to be really useful or something that we have always wanted to have.

Rogue spyware disguised as security software can cause havoc and great damage to our PCs as well as make all our private and sensitive information vulnerable to theft. Usually you will be enticed by pop up ads that will tell you that the speed of your computer has dramatically reduced because of spyware and yet there is free software online for you to easily combat this problem with. Few un-knowing folks can resist such an offer.

To avoid being a victim, it is important that you do your research and get recommendations before trying out any so called spyware remover.

This is not to say that secure free spyware and adware protection is not available. Actually it is and is in fact very vital protection required in every computer today.

Good effective free spyware software should be able to do two keys things for you. Firstly it must be able to provide real time protection by blocking new spyware and adware from gaining access into your PC. Good spyware protection should also be able to quickly detect and remove existing spyware and adware menaces that have already been installed into your computer. Actually some of the available free software can only do one of these two functions mentioned here while other types can actually accomplish both on your behalf. Naturally it is better to get free spyware protection that accomplishes both the two tasks in fighting malicious spyware and adware in your computer.

RV Fuel Problems in Winter

If you are hitting the road during the peak winter months, you can run into fuel issue in an RV. Obviously, this assumes you are in an area that gets cold, not Arizona.

You have two choices for fuel with an RV gas and diesel. Gas engines are generally not problematic in the winter. Gas stays more or less at the liquidity levels as one would find during the summer. Okay, perhaps a bit thicker, but no so much as to effect your engine. Diesel, on the other hand, is an entirely different story.

Diesel fuel can be sensitive to temperature changes. If you are camping in Wyoming in January, you may wake up in the morning to find your engine will not start? Why, the diesel has become thick. Instead of destroying your starter and batteries by cranking them over and over, you need to consider some options.

Many an diesel RV have manifold heaters installed in them. These run off the battery. They perform the same function as a heating blanket in your bed, but for the fuel lines in your RV. Lower end RVs, on the other hand, usually do not have such heaters. If you have one of these, you can usually get a local tow truck company to come out and apply a heater to area. You do not need an RV specialist. In colder areas, most tow companies perform this service for regular cars when their radiators freeze over.

With a little planning, you can avoid the cold diesel issue. If you are in a warm area and driving to a cold area, you need to consider the diesel you are filling up with. In warm areas, they use diesel 2. It does great in warm areas, but freezes in cold ones. As you are driving towards the cold area, try to time you fuel use so that you can fill up at a truck stop station as you enter it. These stations use diesel 1, which smells nasty, but does not thicken in the cold.

Another step to take is to use diesel additives. At practically any RV or auto supply store, you will find additives for keeping your diesel liquid in the cold. They work. That being said, you should only use them sparingly as they get pretty pricey.

Number of RVs on the Road Drops Due to Fuel Costs

He told us he use to see one or two RVs per minute and he said now you are lucky if you see one every 10-minutes.In Springfield, Missouri ...

Couples - How To Navigate Low-Moods

My favorite couple came in for a session this past weekend and a number of insights came out of the work with them that I wanted to share. They had called a week before to schedule the appointment and I caught myself during the week pondering what I might talk about with them. That was a mistake! An innocent one though.

Sometimes prior to certain client’s appointments I will find myself contemplating what might be blocking them. I enjoy this. But I have discovered lately even though it’s enjoyable that this mulling over is all coming from my personal mind, from my thinking and that’s not where insights and answers reside. Additionally, this kind of thinking drains you, it’s subtle. So I decided to initiate another “experiment”. Lately, regular clients are hearing me talk about the dynamic of experimenting. I believe it’s a powerful force.

I decided to stop thinking about how I might help this special couple and just turn it over to my inner wisdom, my spiritual intelligence. The next day, a big insight came! Didn’t take long! I saw clearly that one of the emotions that block this couple from being in a nicer place with one another more frequently is a feeling of “wanting”. I saw in a deeper way that “wanting” is a low mood. They seem to be in “energy of wanting” too much. They want to communicate better, they want to feel more connected, they want to simply get along better. All these dynamics are wonderful but it’s the way we hold them. Too much wanting causes an unsettled feeling, a feeling of non-acceptance., a feeling of searching or needing.

These emotions drop us into a low mood. It’s subtle but its effects are more dramatic because it takes us out of our natural state of well-being. I truly feel that if you can see at a little deeper level that happiness and wisdom are natural to you, they are innate. You will experience your life and your relationships with greater joy. If they nurtured an environment of acceptance and compassion for one another that will lead to more consistent nice feelings.

Usually my first goal with couples is to encourage them to understand the principle of low moods: When one or both are reacting, defending, attacking, making your point, etc., to know that it’s coming out of contaminated thoughts and to walk away and wait for that “heart to heart” place to come back. And it will! This is a natural law. My advice to couples is to learn this phrase: “Sweetie, I love you, I will talk to you an hour!” Walk away, wait, go to your separate corners. That “heart to heart” place will come back and then suddenly you have all sorts of wonderful tools to work with: compassion, understanding, patience, listening, etc.. Those qualities are natural to you when you are in a higher state.

But it’s important to define the subtler signposts of a low mood. Your feelings are your best barometer. Does the conversation between you and your partner feel icky? Even a little bit? That’s a low mood! Hope is a powerful emotion and can create miracles but “Hoping” will take you out of your natural wisdom. Are you always hoping for it to be better, to get that house, to be less angry, and so on? You are in a place of un-acceptance and need. You see what I mean, brothers and sisters. It’s subtle! It’s like the difference between “assessment” and “awareness”. Assessment has a texture of judgment and awareness is neutral.

Clients ask me, “How do I hear my wisdom?” Sometimes it’s about what you don’t do! If you are aware that you are in a low mood, that awareness can be of great value because you stop taking your thoughts and feeling so seriously. But be aware and then don’t try and fix it! Your nice mood will automatically come back!

The favorite couple I felt really heard the nuances of low moods. I am looking forward to seeing them again to see what happened!

Trust Your Inner Spiritual Intelligence
About a month ago, I had big breakthrough around our inner spiritual intelligence or our innate wisdom. I was having a week where I was finding myself frustrated and impatient, which was unusual for me because these feelings are not my norm. I learned a deeper sense of patience from my journey with cancer. Lots of waiting in doctor's offices! As far as frustration, this is a feeling I felt I left behind in the acting days (a hundred years ago). T...

Is Homeschooling For You

There are a few things that you should consider when trying to make the decision to homeschool your children. This is a very important personal decision and should not be taken lightly at all. A few things that you should consider before making your decision are time commitment.

Do you really have the time to sit down with books for a couple of hours a day and complete the projects, prepare lesson plans, grade papers, plan field trips, and the list can go on forever. Homeschooling can take up a great portion of your day. It is a personal sacrifice when you are a Homeschooling parent.

You will have little or no personal time for yourself, let alone your spouse. You must make time for yourself and to take a step away from your daily Homeschooling and go shopping or just relax in a hot tub for a few hours.

Homeschooling is a great financial strain on the entire family. Usually the parent that is doing the teaching does not work outside of the home and the non teaching parent brings in all of the income. This can be a great strain on the family and maybe be very difficult for families who are used to living on two incomes.

Socialization is a very important factor when it comes to Homeschooling. A child must be able to socialize with other children their age. Homeschooling your child can make it a lot easier for you to control who your child comes in contact with and becomes friends with.

Organization plays a huge part for any Homeschooling parent. There is still the house work to be done during the day along with the teaching. You wont always be able to keep the house as clean as youd like or the laundry kept down to a minimum like it was before you chose to homeschool.

You should take careful consideration when it comes to deciding if you would like to be a homeschool teacher and you should decide if Homeschooling is right for your child as well as the entire family.

Do You Even Understand Website Traffic?

So you look at your traffic reports but you’re confused. What is it telling you when it says you have had 6 visitors and 574 hits? Understanding those traffic numbers can be confusing if you don’t understand the meaning behind those technical terms. Once you get the basics down your stats will be much easier to read and understand.

First thing you will need is a good stat counter installed on your website. There are many hosting providers that will give you one already installed. If you find that it is not giving you the information that you need, you will want to find one that does. Most of the stat counters are easy to install requiring only that you copy and paste some HTML code. A counter that is host based will provide you with stats for your site right on your site while with an outside counter you will need to visit another site. At that site you can set up various projects for each of your websites or blogs to monitor your statistics for them.

Now with a good stats counter in place for your site you will need to understand what all those graphs and numbers mean. To understand the numbers you really need to understand the terminology. Once you grasp the terminology you can dig in and analyze the numbers.

Hits are the number of specific objects that have been loaded into a browser. So if you have 15 objects on a page of your site with one HTML file you will collect 16 hits every time a visitor looks at that page. An object on a page could be a picture, a widget, a text box or a small graphic. On any given webpage you will find several objects and in some cases hundreds or objects. The real thing to remember is that hits are not an indication of the number of actual visitors your site has received.

A visitor is logged for your site when a person visits and receives a cookie that marks them as a visitor. The cookie allows your site to identify them as a new visitor or a returning visitor to differentiate them from unique visitors. If the computer the visitor is using does not allow for cookies to mark them, they will be logged as a unique visitor every time they visit.

Visits define how many times visitors have come to your website. These include both unique visitors and returning visitors to get a total. Because of this the number of visits is usually higher than the number of your visitors, especially when you have a site with content that is frequently updated.

The difference between page views and hits is a page view registers the page as a whole. A view of a page that might have 20 different objects would still only count as one page view. At the same time that page would count as 20 hits every time it is viewed by a visitor.

A referral page or site lets you know where your traffic is coming from. It is useful to know how your visitors are finding your site. Are they coming from a search engine or from that signature link in your favorite forum? Knowing this information tells you what promotion technique is working.

The entry page your stat counter provides will tell you which pages your visitors land on when arriving. Most think of visitors always arriving on the home page, but that is not always the case. Search engines also index internal site pages so if the search engine deems that internal page is more relevant to a particular search it could return that result to send visitors directly to that article or page. When you know where your visitors arrive on site you can make adjustments accordingly.

The exit page is the page that visitors leave your site from. This can tell you if they are quickly exiting when they see the order page and you might need to make some changes. If you make changes to pages that visitors usually exit from you can keep them on site longer.

Now that you understand some of the terminology, you can better understand web traffic. Knowing how, when and where visitors are arriving at and leaving from your website will help you customize your site to make it more targeted, efficient and useful. In the long run, that is what will allow you to earn more traffic and as a result conversions.
